BALTIMORE, MD (WEAA) —According to reports, coronavirus cases are spiking in Baltimore City.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott says, “The recent rise in new COVID-19 cases and fatalities in Baltimore City is deeply concerning, particularly among residents under 70".

City health officials say Baltimore has reached widespread community transmission, and officials are having trouble identifying a specific reason for the rapid rise in cases.

"The pandemic is far from over. We urge Baltimore City residents - whether vaccinated or not - to safeguard the health of friends and loved ones. Together, we can navigate this pandemic by wearing a mask, socially distancing, and making a plan to get vaccinated at covax.baltimorecity.gov, " says Mayor Scott.

On Monday, Maryland health officials reported an increase of 631 positive COVID-19 cases since Sunday morning, the lowest daily cases reported this month.

According to data posted on the Maryland Department of Health’s website, 11 more virus-related deaths have been recorded.

Currently, 1,259 patients are hospitalized due to complications from the coronavirus.

The state’s positivity rate is 5.39%.
