Here’s a vocalist that I fell in love with the very first time I heard her music. My love for her sound was deepened when she came into the WEAA studios nearly 10 years ago and sang live for me in studio. It was the most beautiful performance I’d ever witnessed up close and personal. Her name is Lizz Wright.
Lizz is back with a new recording, titled Freedom & Surrender, which serves as her debut for the Concord label. It speaks to her personal experiences over the past few years as she came to grips with a failed marriage and her own thoughts of starting a family. From that she found new energy and presents it in song on a playlist of 13 tracks (10 originals).
Lizz teams up with four-time Grammy-winning bassist and producer Larry Kein for the project. Together they bring in drummer Vinnie Colauiuta, bassist Dan Lutz, guitarist Dean Parks and Jesse Harris. And amongst several keyboardists, we find the timeless Billy Childs doing work on here as well. A favorite tune of mine from this disc is Lizz’ version of Nick Drake’s folk classic “River Man.” It’s a must hear!
