Eric’s Law is a Maryland initiative that allows individuals to voluntarily add a butterfly symbol to their driver’s license or state ID. The symbol indicates a non-apparent disability, such as autism or PTSD, helping to promote safety, understanding, and awareness during interactions with law enforcement and others.
The law is named after Eric Carpenter-Grantham, a Marylander with high-functioning autism, who, alongside his mother Linda, advocated for greater awareness and communication for individuals with hidden disabilities.
The goal of Eric’s Law is to create safer, more informed, and compassionate exchanges for people with non-visible disabilities.
