A Black history salute to WEAA’s historian and storyteller, Mary Carter Smith (February 10, 1919- April 24, 2007).
Well known for her radio show, “Griot for the Young and Young of Heart,” on WEAA, Smith was a storyteller of traditional African and African American tales.
As a Baltimore City school teacher, she taught Black history through stories, poems, and songs.
In 1991, she was named the official Griot of Maryland.
