Urban Reads owner faces racial threats, calls for community support

BALTIMORE, MD — Tia Hamilton, owner of Urban Reads Bookstore, joins Dr. Kaye to discuss the racial online discrimination and intimidation she faces, including threats and social media attacks.

Hamilton says she has long received threats due to her work with State VS Us Magazine, a platform that amplifies the voices of high-profile cases, exposes wrongful convictions, and promotes social justice.

She says a group recently hosted what appeared to be an online Klan rally targeting her, leading to direct threats against her bookstore on Greenmount Avenue in Baltimore.

According to Hamilton, individuals have shown up outside of her storefront on dirt bikes and in Proud Boys attire with masks.

She says she has received support from community groups but emphasizes the need for more help, particularly from Black men, to ensure safety.

Hamilton says the Attorney General’s Office is investigating the threats.

A community walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m. to show solidarity.

Baltimore native, Micarie Kemp has always been passionate about working in the media.
