Civil rights attorney speaks on Minnesota lawmaker shootings and rising political violence

Nekima Levy Armstrong, an award-winning civil rights attorney, scholar-activist, and former president of the Minneapolis NAACP, discusses the recent shooting of Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota by a suspect who allegedly posed as a police officer and used a fake police vehicle.

Armstrong notes the contrast between the suspect’s peaceful arrest and the often deadly encounters Black individuals have faced with law enforcement, citing the case of Philando Castile. She raises concerns about growing political hostility and connects the current climate to what she describes as a lack of empathy and decorum during the Trump administration.

Armstrong calls for prayer, legal advocacy, and preparedness in the face of increasing threats, and suggests that lawmakers may need to evaluate their personal security options.
