Mass Shooting, Police Brutality, and Viral Challenges: Dr. Kaye and De Sousa Tackle Public Safety and Community Trust

Dr. Kaye and former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Darryl De Sousa discussed the recent mass shooting in a New York City skyscraper, where a gunman killed three people, including an off-duty police officer and a senior Blackstone executive, before taking his own life.

The shooter was reportedly upset over chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) related to his football career.

De Sousa emphasized situational awareness, compliance with police, and the importance of personal emergency action plans. He also addressed police brutality, referencing the case of William McNeil, who was assaulted by officers despite following commands.

The conversation explored the challenges of police encounters in the Black community and cited Supreme Court cases Pennsylvania v. Mims (1977) and Maryland v. Wilson (1997), which permit officers to order vehicle passengers to exit during traffic stops.

Doc Cheatham joined the discussion, stressing that compliance can increase survival during police interactions.

They also warned about the TikTok “Door Kick Challenge,” a viral trend that has led to real-life confrontations and arrests. The conversation underscored the need for better police training, de-escalation tactics, and community education on mental health.
