Power, Politics and Public Health with Dr. Kaye

Dr. Kaye and political strategist Steve Phillips tackled a range of pressing issues in a wide-ranging conversation, from systemic inequality to public health concerns making headlines.

Phillips introduced the concept of "swamp audits" — a framework for measuring the over-representation of white men across key sectors of American life. The discussion framed the audits as a tool for quantifying systemic inequality and making the case for structural change.

On voting rights, Phillips was direct. With voter suppression efforts intensifying nationwide, he argued that turning out the vote remains one of the most powerful tools available. He pointed to Texas as a telling example, noting that 61% of eligible voters in the state are people of color — a demographic reality with significant political implications if those voters show up.

The conversation also shifted to public health. With the Hantavirus drawing concern, Dr. Amish Adoja, a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins University, offered reassurance — the virus has not spread beyond the affected cruise ship and poses no significant risk to the general public. He did, however, urge continued vigilance around avian influenza.
