Dr. Kaye completes 40-mile walk from Washington D.C. to Baltimore

(WEAA) —Dr. Kaye, Coach Chauncey Whitehead, and Dr. Shay Brown-Brown completed a 40-mile walk from Washington D.C. to Baltimore on Saturday, finishing to a celebration of community support at Lake Montebello and Mission Fit.

The journey began with prayer at Dr. Kaye's childhood home on Edgewood Street NE in Washington D.C., a place she says shaped who she is. "This is where I learned to be a warrior, this is where I learned how to resist, this is where I learned about racism and poverty," she said. "We started our walk where I started my journey."

Dr. Kaye, Dr. Shay and Coach Chauncey trained for 10 weeks, covering 212 miles in total with a peak of 82 miles in May. The walk was divided into hourly segments, each honoring different historical figures and causes. The route included a 65-foot incline at mile 8 and a 158-foot decline at mile 27.

Dr. Kaye said the hardest moment came at mile 29 when she became dehydrated, nauseous and dizzy. Dr. Shay stepped in to help her push through. "We started together and finished together," Dr. Kaye said.

Throughout the journey, the team also received support from Tia Mallory who drove the route in front of them and provided ground support, Dr. Loren Henderson and Dr. LaMarr Shields. The trio was greeted at Mission Fit by Chauncey's Angels and Champions (to walk the last 5K) and at Lake Montebello — the final destination, by WEAA listeners and supporters.
