Tens of thousands of northwest Indiana residents are in survival mode nearly two weeks after a deadly storm knocked out power across the region.
Gary, Indiana Councilman At Large Myles Tolliver joins WEAA to give an update on the crisis. The outage began after a deadly Aug. 11 storm downed trees and power lines throughout the area. At its peak, 300,000 customers were without power.
Schools in Gary remain closed. Residents have been lining up for hot meals, throwing out spoiled food and turning to social media to locate open laundromats, working Wi-Fi and supplies including food, diapers and cleaning wipes for low-income neighbors.
Northern Indiana Public Service Co. has been working to restore power since the storm.
