(Washington, DC) -- Maryland Congressman Kweisi Mfume and Senator Angela Alsobrooks have reintroduced legislation to protect high school and college athletes from heat-related deaths and illnesses.
The Jordan McNair Student Athlete Heat Fatality Prevention Act is named after the Maryland Terrapins football player who died in 2018 after he collapsed from a heat stroke on the practice field.
An investigation determined the athletic staff did not take aggressive measures to lower his body temperature.
The bill calls for schools to implement heat illness emergency action plans, including the use of cold-water immersion equipment.
The bill was first introduced in 2023 by Mfume and then-Senator Ben Cardin, but it did not make it out of committee.
