Pianist Eddie Palmieri Turns 79

Today, nine-time Grammy award-winner Eddie Palmieri turns 79. Born in the South Bronx in a Puerto Rican family, Palmieri is considered one of the greatest pianists of the last fifty years. Palmieri was the founder of the bands La Perfecta and La Perfecta II.

Early influences on Palmieri were his brother, Charlie Palmieri, as well as Thelonious Monk and MCoy Tyner. He defined "Latin jazz," as music incorporating both indigenous influences from Latin America, and African influences. That combination pushed Palmieri to experiment and modify. While with La Perfecta, he incorporated the afro-Cuban rhythm mozambique which can be heard in this song, Lo quetraigoessabroso.

Listen tonight as Fiesta Musical shares a selection of Eddie Palmieri songs, along with more Christmas salsa throughout the evening. It all starts at 8 PM on Tuesdays.
