Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is asking the state to allow the city to increase its sales tax by up to two-percent.
During a House committee hearing Tuesday, City Administrator Faith Leach said by giving Baltimore the opportunity to generate its own revenue through a local sales tax, the state would be aligning its tax policy with Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina and other states.
Under the proposal the city could bring in around $200 million.
Republican Delegate Kathy Szeliga says the proposal is a job-killing, economy-crushing disaster in the making.
