Inside the Settlement: Tracing Baltimore's Opioid Funds is a student-led investigation that examines how opioid settlement funds are being distributed in Baltimore and who gets to decide where the money goes. This project focuses on transparency and accountability, highlighting which funds are allocated for treatment programs, hard reduction services, and community support.
One element of the opioid crisis that impacts families in the Baltimore region and across the country is opioid use during pregnancy.
Morgan State University students spoke with Dr. Mishka Terplan — a board-certified expert in both obstetrics and gynecology, and addiction medicine — to explore this critical issue. Dr. Terplan is internationally recognized for his work supporting pregnant and parenting people living with opioid use disorder.
In the interview, he addresses widespread misconceptions about opioid use during pregnancy, the stigma and discrimination that create barriers to care, and the effects of in-utero opioid exposure on newborns.
