September Community Cares: The Henrietta Lacks Legacy Group

The Henrietta Lacks Legacy Group invites you to support the creation of the wax figure of Henrietta Lacks for the National Great Black in Wax Museum.

Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman who was the unwitting donor of cells from her cancerous tumor that was biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. These cells were cultured by George Otto Gey to create the first human immortal cell line, now known as the HeLa cell line which is still used for medical research.

The first HLLG Annual Luncheon will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 1pm -2:30pm at the Fleming Senior Center located at 641 Main Street in Turner Station, MD. Keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Roland A. Pattillo, former director of gynecologic oncology at Moorehouse School of Medicine, where he led a team of physicians who successfully cultivated cervical tissue cells outside the body that were used to develop a vaccine for Human Papilloma Virus or HPV (which prevents cervical cancer).
