(WEAA) — The co-founders of the Target boycott are pushing back on claims that the campaign is over, saying the effort remains ongoing and indefinite.
"We are still boycotting Target," Dr. Nekima Levy Armstrong said.
Levy Armstrong, Monique Cullars-Doty and Jaylani Hussein launched the boycott at a press conference in downtown Minneapolis in January 2025, announcing the nationwide campaign would begin Feb. 1. The boycott was sparked by Target's decision to roll back its diversity and inclusion commitments following pressure from the Trump administration — a reversal that frustrated many who remembered the retailer's pledge to double down on promoting Black businesses and equity in the wake of George Floyd's murder.
The co-founders' remarks come after Jamal Bryant, pastor of a prominent Atlanta megachurch, declared Wednesday that the boycott was officially concluding. Levy Armstrong pushed back on that characterization, saying Bryant took it upon himself to position himself as a leader of the campaign without the backing of the original organizers.
