Maryland offers interest free loans to federal workers affected by government shutdown

(Annapolis, MD) -- Governor Wes Moore has announced the authorization of a second payment in the state's Federal Shutdown Loan Program for workers affected by the partial government shutdown.

The Maryland Department of Labor is offering interest free loans to TSA employees who are working without a paycheck.

"Our federal employees, including TSA agents, are showing up for work every day, and we refuse to leave them behind because of dysfunction in Washington. We’re committed to using every resource at our disposal to support our people, keep families stable, and ensure they can meet their daily needs," said Governor Moore.

The eligible workers will be given a one-time $700 check that would have to be paid back 45-days after the shutdown ends.

The state launched the same program during the federal government shutdown in October and November of last year.

Department of Labor Secretary Portia Wu says the loan program is not a substitute for a paycheck, but it can provide a degree of relief for the workers.
