The Morgan Global Journalism Review, a faculty led publication, is taking a critical look at American history through a Black lens, and the conversation is as timely as ever.
WEAA's Dr. Kaye led Wednesday night's discussion with Dr. Aisha Powell and Benjamin Davis, examining key periods in American history often left out of the mainstream narrative.
The conversation spans the founding era from 1776 to 1825, including the exclusion of Black people from the Declaration of Independence and the little-known story of Robert Hemings, through the rise of Jim Crow laws and the role of the Black press, and into the civil rights movement and the strategic impact of figures like A. Philip Randolph.
The discussion also touched on the United Nations' potential vote on the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and what it could mean for the ongoing pursuit of equality. Throughout, the conversation centered Black resilience and the importance of telling these stories on Black terms.
